It looks like Bellator MMA is signing former UFC welterweight title contender Rory MacDonald to an exclusive, multi-fight contract.
FloCombat.com first reported the news on Wednesday. According to the report, the UFC elected not to match Bellator’s offer to the Tristar Gym export. MacDonald was recently removed from the UFC.com welterweight rankings.
MacDonald last appeared at UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, where he suffered a five-round decision loss to Stephen Thompson in the evening’s main event on Jun 18. Prior to that, the “Red King” came up short in a 170-pound title bid against then champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189, losing via fifth-round TKO in Sherdog.com’s “Fight of the Year” for 2015.
MacDonald compiled a 9-4 record over the course of his Octagon tenure and earned notable wins over Tyron Woodley, Tarec Saffiedine, Demian Maia, Jake Ellenberger, B.J. Penn and Nate Diaz.
