Brad Calipari, son of coach John Calipari, announced Sunday that he will walk on to the UK basketball team.
Calipari played guard at Lexington Christian Academy before transferring to MacDuffie school in 2014 and was named MVP at January's Hoophall Classic. At 6 feet, 180 pounds, he played with the Kentucky Travelers basketball club, a Nike-affiliated team, this past summer and averaged three points and 10.2 minutes.
Calipari garnered interest from smaller Division I schools but ultimately chose the Wildcats. His choice also secures John Calipari's role as bench boss for the forseeable future.
“First of all, my wife has already told me if he decides to come, ‘You’re not leaving,’ so that would mean I’m here five more years,” he told ESPN in July. “If I’m here five more years, why not stay ’til 70, why not sign a new contract and I’ll be 70 when I leave. Seems like everyone coaches until 70, I was thinking 60, but maybe I’ll coach until 72, maybe 73."
Perhaps the youngest Calipari chose Kentucky not just with hopes of playing time, but maybe some coaching time down the road.
