Kiki Bertens vs Jasmine Paolini WTA. Palermo, Quarterfinal
🔵 World no. 5 Kiki Bertens continues to pick up easy wins at Palermo as she saw off Aleksandra Krunic for the third time in as many meetings. Apart from getting broken couple of times, it was a pretty smooth ride for the top seed, winning 6-3, 6-1 in 78 minutes; only six minutes longer than her match against Gorgodze.
🔴 This week, Bertens will not face a top 100 opponent until the championship round, making the Dutchwoman the clear favorite to lift her tenth WTA singles title, and third of the season after St. Petersburg and Madrid. With a victory on Friday, she will join world no. 1 Barty as the match win leader of the season (39).
🔵 Jasmine Paolini was last to take the center court on Thursday. She exchanged six pairs of service breaks with former top 25 player Irina-Camelia Begu, and trailed the third set tiebreak by 1-4, before winning the two-hour and 48-minute marathon match, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. She is through to her second WTA quarterfinal.
🔴 Paolini — the only Italian remaining — upset sixth seed Laura Siegemund, 6-1, 6-4, in the opening hurdle. She now boasts seven wins off twelve main draw outings on the WTA tour. Last year she entered the quarterfinal of Prague as a lucky loser, beating Kasatkina en route, but fell to Shuai Zhang at that stage.
🔵 As has been the case in the first two rounds, Bertens seeks to maintain her perfect season record against outside top 100 players, which stands as 12-0. Paolini, on the other hand, is about to take on a top tenner for the first time ever. Suffice to say; the Dutch player is the clear favorite in the pair’s first meeting.
